John Dowd - the President of the Australian chapter
of the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) - will discuss the
consequences of the security co-operation for human rights issues.
Senator Kerry Nettle - a senator from the Greens Party
- will talk on the issue of Australian government policy regarding this
security co-operation, especially related to the co-operation between
both nations to develop nuclear power for peaceful purposes.
Dr Clinton Fernandes - Senior Lecturer in Strategic
Studies at the University of New South Wales, Australian Defence Force
Academy - will discuss the implications of the security co-operation
in relation to the role of TNI.
Prof. Peter King - Convenor, West Papua Project, Centre
for Peace and Conflict Studies, University of Sydney - will address
the implications of the security co-operation for West Papua.
The signing of the "Framework Agreement for the Promotion of a
Strategic Cooperation Partnership in Defense and Security" on 13
November 2006 in Lombok island of Indonesia brings with it the reminder
of a similar treaty signed by the Keating government in 1995 when it
closed its eyes to human rights abuses in East Timor and other parts
of
Indonesia. This new agreement again leaves some serious questions regarding
any commitment to human rights and democracy in Indonesia. Indonesian
Solidarity is deeply concerned that the security co-cooperation between
Indonesia and Australia will not assist military reform in any way.
